1960's Images
All the images below except the Dewsbury Xmas lights, which was taken in 1959, are from the period 1963 to 1969 When I was employed as a photographer for Photopress Leeds Ltd.Here I gained experience in all areas of photography, including Wedding, Commercial, Industrial and news photography.
This photograph is circa 1959, the camera then would have been a Rolleicord VA. the film was Ilford HP3 developed in ID11 stock for 8 minutes at 20' C. The exposure I think was around 20 seconds at f16. I seem to remember using a rule of thumb in those days for night shots on HP3, of exposing for a time in seconds equal to the f number, say 11 seconds at f11 and so on. The print was made on kodak Bromesko fine ivory lustre and this scan is from the original print made at that time.
Leeds United vs Everton 1964, taken using a Speed Graphic 5x4 camera. The negative was made on a P1600 glass plate which had a recommended speed on ASA400. Exposure was always at the fastest shutter speed for this type of work usually 1/500 of a second at an aperture around f22 to f8 depending on the light, to aid focus by working depth of field. The negatives were then developed in Kodak CPC (a standard MQ developer) at a dilution and time according to the lighting conditions at the time of the exposure.
The print was made on Kodak bromide paper grade 2 and the scan is from the original print made at that time.
Leeds vs Wigan circa 1964 taken using a Rolleicord VA. The film was kodak TRI X ASA 400, as the light was good the exposure was 1/500 at f16 developed in Kodak DPC.

Yorkdhire vs Newzealand 1964. In this example the light very poor, it was also raining heavily at the time. The camera was aRolleicord VA and the film was Kodak Tri X ASA 400. the exposure was 1/500 at f8 I think and the film was push processed in Kodak DPC. The print is onKodak bromide grade 2 and the scan is from this original print.
This was the first assignment I went on after joining after joining the freelance firm in November 1963. I believe the fire had been burning through the night and by the time this was taken the next morning, it was mainly a damping down operation. The camera was a Rolleicord VA, using Tri X developed in DPC. The print was made on Kodak bromide paper grade 2 and the scan is from the original print.
Accident in Leeds from circa 1963. I have no exposure details for this except that it was taken using a 5x4 Speed Graphic on Kodak P1600 glass plates and developed in Kodak DPC. The print is on Koda bromide paper grade 2 and again the scan is from the original print.
The details given above with each picture are from two sources, notes which were written on the back of the prints at the time and my memory. As already noted all the scans are of the original prints from that time. Some of the prints have survived the passage of time remarkably wellconsidering how they were processed, certainly not to archival standards. There is some physical damage/marks, some of which show in the scans.
Of further note. I should add that these images have been used on several of my previous web sites and have been resized a number of times. This has affected their quality somewhat, the only ones I could find were quite small and I have made them as large as I could without affecting the quality too much I hope. I still have the original prints somewhere in the house and intended to make new scans, however to date i have been unable to lay my hands on them.
